Islands off the coast of Lantau

The islands in the distance
almost look like clouds,
as they’re hiding in the mists
of the South Chinese Sea.

I came here by plane,
well, not to this point, but
to this part of the world,
but looking at this I dream

of what this must have looked
like for an adventurous soul
some centuries ago, the oceans
behind these islands calling
to be discovered, traveled on
conquered.

And even though the entire
world is within our reach,
there are still so many places
to discover, to explore,
to see, to feel, to taste;
for the adventurous souls
of the age of airplanes and
internet.
